As a former resident of Oakland, and as a person with chemical sensitivities who has been permanently disabled, I strenuously object to the reversing of the current Oakland city ban on chemically derived pesticides and herbicides in Oakland parks, and in the East Bay Regional Parks. I am a resident of South Berkeley, and spend a lot of time in Oakland parks. I am also an environmental scientist and educator. It is irresponsible to use pesticides in areas used by the public, especially areas frequented by children. Even when applied properly, "safe" concentrations of pesticides are largely determined from results of studies on healthy adults, not children, elderly, or those with otherwise compromised health, all of whom live near and/or use Oakland park. Additionally, pesticide runoff contributes to degraded water and habitat quality for the birds, fish, and other wildlife (including endangered species) that depend on the SF Bay. Please do not use pesticides in Oakland, for the health of its citizens and Bay Area ecology. Thank you. |

It has caused major ailments, death-causing, and caused many criminal acts by those "sworn to protect" to cover this major crime. The Pinole Dump that was CalTrans Salvaged Waste next door to me will statisticly murder more than the 9/11 horror with its Penta and Dioxin. I want to address the Council. I am strongly opposed to the use of pesticides and herbicides, due to the contamination of the environment and the inherent health risks for those exposed to the chemicals. This includes workers applying the chemicals, children and adults coming in contact with the substances. Please set an example and keep the ban on pesticides in Oakland. There are numerous other ways to fix a weed problem-ie. weeding or flame (with the use of a fuel filled back pack). By using pesticides, other beneficial insects are killed in the process, disturbing the delicate relationships within the ecosystem, often increasing a pest problem. Please, do not reintroduce pesticide use in Oakland. Be an example to other communities by doing the right thing for the environment and for public health. |

I am a former resident of Oakland, and am a mother of young children who enjoy Oakland parks. I also am the Director of the Pesticide Education Group. PEG is working in Marin County to reduce pesticide use in parks, open spaces and on school grounds. We have often used Oakland as the standard by which others should follow in pest management practices. It is extremely disappointing to hear that you might be moving away from upholding strong standards that protect the parks, people and their pets and moving towards weakening those standards. Please take into serious consideration what the repercussions of your actions will be-not only will their be detrimental effects to Oakland residents and the environment-it will send a very poor message to other municipalities who have looked to Oakland as a model. |

Fire control in the hills is an immensely important issue, but it should never be used as political cover to justify unnecessary use of potentially toxic chemicals. Neither should it be used to pressure city or county agencies into abandoning a least toxic/IPM approach to hazardous vegetation management, if that policy has been effective. The speed with which this change has been proposed and moved ahead makes it appear suspicious on both these counts. For the sake of all those whose lives and health are negatively impacted by herbicide use in public places, please do not institute this change until you have had a chance to hear from the effected communities, and until some hard evidence of the necessity for it has been provided for public comment and review. |

Please act to prevent spraying of pesticides in the East Bay Hills. Pesticides find their way into drinking water and into the air we breath. They cannot be contained and cause numerous illnesses. I have been diagnosed with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and I want an outdoor environment that is safe for myself and other humans and pets. Please don't let fear drive you to the use of pesticides; rather investigate other newer methods, and there are other options, that will be healthy for humans, pets and trees. Consult with the Green Resource Center in Berkeley, CA. Thank you. |

Dear Councilmembers: As a neighbor of Oakland (and a former employee of an agency with offices in the city of Oakland), a person living with the devastating effects of chemical injury whose recreation IS walks in the Oakland/Berkeley hills, the public member of Alameda County's IPM (Integrated Pest Management) committee and the president of the Environmental Health Network, I plead with you to rise to the challenge of controlling weeds and other "pests" with the least toxic means available. Herbicides are not the least toxic means available . . . regardless of advertising hype. We ALL are stakeholders when it comes to breathing. I see the eucalyptus coming down in the Oakland hills and think it is a lunatic fringe project. But if they must come down, then do it manually. The machines alone are bad enough, spewing diesel fumes and leaking oil all over. But Roundup and or any other herbicide do indeed cause a wide range of human health and environmental health maladies. As Roundup and other herbicides are used, the things they are sprayed on become resistant to the herbicides, thus creating a need for increasingly greater quantities to be dumped in order to get the same results. Please see this page for much more on Roundup and Monsanto: http://www.mindfully.org/Pesticide/Monsanto-Roundup-Glyphosate.htm |

I become very sick when exposed to pesticides and am considered disabled as a result of it. Pesticides severely effect my neurological, immune and endocrine systems so that I cannot walk, think, and have trouble breathing when exposed to them. This usually lasts for weeks following an exposure. There are very few places that are safe for me to go because of this, but public parks should be one of those places. After all, I am one of the public and should not be discriminated against. Additionally, as a disabled person who is exquisitely sensitive to chemicals such as pesticides, I should not be denied access to public places such as a park, just as you would not deny a person in a wheelchair access. |

Please don't give up the good fight. You're protecting people, such as my wife, who are immediately affected by pesticide applications. She's very sensitive to them. But even though most people aren't that sensitive, their bodies, especially those of children, can be damaged in the long run. Pesticides are poison, plain & simple. There is no such thing as a safe pesticide. We're fouling our own nest in the name of expediency and it's hurting some people immediately and all of us in the long run. Please take a stand and do the right thing, not what's politically and fiscally expedient. We're fighting to do the right thing back here in the East. If you fold, then we have less of a chance to make improvements here. Thank you. |
